The Skipper Steve Cooksey

Steve Cooksey learned to sail with his father in a home made Mirror dinghy at the age of 7 but his interest soon moved to other teenage passions such as motorbikes and then on to marriage and raising a family.

When he moved to Cornwall from the southeast in 1991 he found he was surrounded by boats and so the natural progression was to buy and restore a very old Enterprise dinghy which rekindled his love of the water and all things nautical. After messing about in dinghies for a few years he bought “Gamaldansk”, his first yacht, in the winter of 2001 and she has since become the other woman in his life.

He has studied and trained to RYA / MCA Costal Skipper standard and holds a powerboat level 2 certificate and is hoping to become the holder of the coveted Yatchmaster Offshore certificate by the end of 2007. He was lucky enough to be a member of the crew on local Fowey boat “Black Adder” owned by Fowey Maritime Centres’ Shawn Plummer, for the 2005 Fastnet race, the boat coming in 51st overall in a fleet of more than 280.

Steve works as a freelance sound engineer in the conference industry and is looking forward to being joined by his colleagues for this exciting voyage, without whom it wouldn’t be possible.
